Increase in corner exit performance on motorcycles Aprilia RSV4 RR 1000cc 190CV

by | Dec 16, 2020 | Case Study

Wingsdeporting for motorcycles, designed to reduce the wheelie effect at the exit of the curve.

The applicant needs to improve the stability of the front end on his motorcycle. The practical motivation is given by wanting to increase acceleration when exiting corners by reducing the wheelie effect due to high power of the motorcycle in question.

The idea is to use a solution similar to that used in racing, or by applying side wings that create downforce at the front of the bike.

For the study of the airfoil at the moment no software has been used, the geometries have been calculated following the standard basic formulas of fluid dynamics. Fluid dynamic software should be exploited to improve the profile in question.

To further increase the downforce without increasing the size of the wings we used the same concept on the rear-view mirrors, i.e. the mirror stems have been designed with an airfoil overturned deportant.

Next steps

A next development would be to use an actuator to adjust the inclination of the wings in operation of the speed and of the curve to face just like the wings of an airplane.

Requirements:

  • when exiting the curve, make the most of the downforce, so make the wings work to the maximum.
  • in a straight line, use the downforce of the wings only when changing gear to reduce the wheelie effect.
  • when the torque transmitted to the wheels can no longer create the soaring effect the aerodynamic friction of the wings must be low in order not to have a slowdown of the bike, therefore the wings must be positioned in order to create the least possible friction.

When the torque transmitted to the wheels can no longer create the soaring effect the aerodynamic friction of the wings must be low in order not to have a slowdown of the bike, therefore the wings must be positioned in order to create the least possible friction.
