Before of all it’s better to know that in the polymer world there’re distinct area :
Standard polymers, like ABS, PVC, HIPS, PP, PE etc, the most common materials used in a large range of applications.
Techno polymers such PC, PET, PA etc, applied in elements with an upper level of performance than standard.
High techno polymers, PEI, PPSU, PVDF, PTFE etc, used when the performance are critical.
Super high techno polymers, PEEK and PPS, actually the most technical polymers on market, when the special application knock the door of metal replacement.
And now we ask those directly concerned.
PPS
PEEK
When you was born ?
l saw the light by Friedel
and Crafts in 1888, but
only in 1940 start my
industrialization
I was born in 1978, in ICI labs,
Imperial Chemical
Industries, in England
Can I ask your name ?
Sure,
Polyphenylene Sulfide
Of course,
Polyether ether ketone
Why people say you’re a metal replacement ?
In many particular
applications I can replace
metal items
Because i can produce
difficult component than
metal
Can be more clear?
The term metal replacement stands for all those plastic components that replace traditional metal parts
Replace metal parts with plastic parts, better in lightness and complex details
Why I must choose you ?
I’m very stiff and my chemical resistence is one of the best. Screw grip is satisfied.
Why? You ask me why? Because i’m the best in fatigue, chemical aggression, bio compatibility.
And in 3D printing?
‘I’m not so sofisticated to print like PEEK, I need only an extruder can set at 320°
Well, I prefer heated chamber with 170-180°C, an extruder that can arrive at 430°C
Are you able to work at 200°C ?
My version filled with glass at 25% can arrive at 280°, with post treatment
In natural version, unfilled, I work at 200°C, but in filled version with glass fiber I can arrive at 280°
Who’s the more expensive ?
Compared to other polymers, I’m not so cheap, but between PEEK and me there’s an high distance, me more low
It’s a point of view. Need best performance? Don’t look at the price but at the result.
And now we can conclude our short talk with those two super techno polymers, both very interesting and very high performer.
Hope that can help the printers to choose the correct material for their application.
